This spectacular tree with its stunning flowers provides a focal point in any garden. Originally from China and Korea, the Crape Myrtle is an upright, deciduous tree or large shrub of stature that can be single or multi-stemmed. The tree is frost tolerant, prefers full sun and can grow to a height of 6 m with a spread of up to 6 m.
The bark is prominent, smooth with a pinkish grey polished aura about it and it peels in early summer to expose creamy new bark. Crape Myrtles are chiefly known for their colorful and long lasting flowers in the summer months. The colours of the crinkled crepe-like flowers range from white and pink to mauve, purple or carmine depending on the variety. New leaves emerge bronze in colour, changing into dark green and the Lagerstroemia indica provides a beautiful autumnal display. During winter this tree is transformed into a living sculpture with its sinuous tree form.
The Pride of India has a multitude of uses in the garden, including hedging or screening or as a flowering focal point. This is an understated, easy on the eye tree that pleases the senses with its shape, form and sensuous flowers.
