Viburnum odoratissimum is a tall, fast growing shrub that originates from the Far East. Evergreen with small white blooms, this plant is very popular for use as a screening or hedging specimen.
Growing to a height of between 2 to 6 m with a spreading crown, the Sweet viburnum has ornamental qualities. The leaves are large and glossy, and the light green colouring provides year round interest. Delicate white flowers appear from June to October, attracting insects and butterflies with its subtle fragrance. The berries that follow are inconspicuous, but will also entice various bird species to the garden.
This shrub is moderately hardy and can tolerate cold conditions, although it is somewhat sensitive to drought and needs moderate watering. The roots are not invasive, but it is important to consider the spread of the shrub in small spaces. The spread can range from 1.5 m to 4 m which is one of the reasons that makes the Viburnum an excellent hedging plant.
Robust, with great ornamental value and the ability to survive coastal conditions, the Viburnum odoratissimum is a versatile shrub that will enhance your garden throughout the year.
