Dodonaea viscosa var. angustifolia – Sand olive – Sandolien

Water wise and evergreen, the indigenous Sand olive is an all-rounder that will brighten your garden.

Growing to a height of between 3 and 7 m with a spread of 3 to 5 m, Dodonaea angustifolia is known for its bright green foliage throughout most of the year.  The leaves are simple lanceolate with pointed tips and secrete a gum exudate which gives it a glossy appearance.  The bark of the tree is interesting with dark grey colouring, fissured and peeling on the trunk and reddish brown on the branches.

Pale green flowers are inconspicuous and attract butterflies from winter through spring.  During late spring to early summer pink coloured, winged fruits that resemble flowers, appear in profusion.  The papery fruit contain black, smooth seeds.  In addition, many birds use the tree as a nesting site.

Dodonaea angustifolia is highly adaptable and can be used as a stand-alone feature tree or as a boundary/ hedging plant, especially in dry areas.  The tree is frost and drought hardy and the roots are soil binding making it a good choice as a ground stabilizer and for erosion control.

Fast growing, water wise and hardy, the Sand olive will make a great addition to your garden.
