An evergreen to semi-deciduous tree belonging to the Citrus family. The common name ‘Sneezewood’ comes from irritant oils in the tree’s timber, which caused sneezing when inhaled by woodworkers. Ptaeroxylon obliquum reaches a mature height of 35 m in its natural habitat. In landscapes, it grows between 6–15 m tall, with a canopy spread of 3–6 m Its distribution stretches from Tanzania in the north to the Eastern Cape in the south, adapting to both montane forests and drier bushveld regions.

P. obliquum makes a beautiful medium-sized tree for gardens and avenues. Leaves are opposite, evenly compound, with dark green asymmetric leaflets. In autumn, the tree produces foliage in shades of yellow to red, adding striking seasonal beauty to gardens. The bark develops into dark grey, deeply furrowed, interlinked grooves on older branches. Male and female flowers occur on separate trees. Sweetly scented yellow blooms open white with an orange centre, emerging from creamy yellow buds. Fruits appear as oblong capsules with a reddish-brown notch at the tip, produced from August to December.

Sneezewood produces exceptionally hard and durable timber. Historically, it served in railway sleepers, fence posts, and even machine bearings, where it outlasted brass and iron. Traditional medicine values Sneezewood for its bark and wood infusions, used to treat rheumatism, arthritis, and heart ailments. Resin is applied to warts and used to control ticks on cattle. Twigs brewed as tea relieve urinary complaints. Modern studies highlight chromones and phenolic compounds with antioxidant and antihypertensive properties, pointing to potential pharmacological applications.
