Tarconanthus camphoratus – Camphor bush – Vaalbos – Mofahlana

Known as the Camphor bush because of its scent, Tarconathus camphoratus is a semi-deciduous to evergreen tree with a dense crown and drooping branches. All parts of this tree smell strongly of camphor when crushed. This tree grows in a variety of habitats, from Kalahari veld, woodland, woodland, wooded grassland to montane thicket.

The Camphor bush can reach a mature height between 2 and 9m depending on environmental conditions. The branches and foliage make a V-shaped canopy. Leaves of this tree are simple, alternate and leathery with a smooth margin. From March to June, flowers appear on the tree in branched sprays of creamy white flowers. These are followed by nutlets covered in long white woolly hairs.

This small tree is particularly suited to tough conditions, such as areas battered by wind and coastal sea spray to dry inland gardens. The leaves are palatable to domestic livestock and wildlife as well. It makes a beautiful tree for small gardens. Because of its soil binding properties, this tree can be used to control erosion. If pruned into a single stem, Tarchonanthus camphoratus is a decorative tree for small gardens. This tree has an aggressive root system hence it should be planted away from buildings.
