Burchellia bubalina – Wild Pomegranate – maHlosana

Burchellia is a genus in the Rubiaceae family with just one species: Burchellia bubalina. This species is native to southern Africa. The Wild Pomegranate (Burchellia bubalina) is a striking evergreen shrub known for its glossy dark green foliage. Native to the coastal regions of South Africa, this shrub is admired for its slow but steady growth. Despite its modest size, it begins to flower even while still young, typically reaching a mature height of about 2.5 meters and a spread of 1.5 meters in garden settings.

This plant is an attractive and neat ornamental addition to gardens. Its leaves are dark green, glossy, and hairless on the upper side, with a paler underside. Young leaves are soft but become thickly leathery with age. The bark is smooth on young branches, turning rough as the plant matures.

The Wild Pomegranate produces vibrant orange flowers primarily during spring and summer. These flowers give way to green, urn-shaped fruits that cluster together. The nectar-rich flowers attract birds and bees, making it an excellent choice for wildlife gardens. It resembles the true pomegranate when in full bloom, hence its common name. The fruits remain on the tree for several months after ripening.

Burchellia bubalina prefers full sun but can also grow well in dense shade. It should be shielded from harsh winter winds and extreme frost to prevent damage. Its non-aggressive root system makes it suitable for container planting.
