Persea americana – Avocado ‘Fuerte variety’

Known for its hardy nature, Persea americana ‘Fuerte’ is one of the most popular avocado varieties in South Africa. The name ‘Fuerte’, meaning ‘strong’ in Spanish, reflects its ability to thrive in various climates, withstanding temperatures as low as -4 degrees Celsius. However, it’s important to note that the tree is sensitive to frost during flowering.

The ‘Fuerte’ is a fast-growing, evergreen tree with a spreading growth habit, ideal for providing shade. It flowers from June to October, and the fruit ripens from March to August, depending on the region. A unique feature of avocado trees is their need for cross-pollination, so planting more than one tree can help ensure better fruit yield.

The fruit is pear-shaped, with a slightly rough, green skin and a creamy, buttery texture. It ripens off the tree, with the skin remaining green when ready to eat. Grafted trees can bear fruit in just two years, while those grown from seed can take up to seven years.

Avocado trees thrive in warm, sunny spots with well-drained soil. They require careful watering, as their roots are sensitive to excess moisture. Remember that parts of the avocado tree can be toxic to pets, so take precautions if you have animals.
