Pterocarpus rotundifolius – Round-leaved bloodwood – Dopperkiaat –  Muhataha

Pterocarpus rotundifolius is a deciduous tree valued for its graceful shape, attractive foliage and seasonal display of bright yellow flowers. It reaches a mature height of about 10 m under ideal growing conditions. It occurs naturally from KwaZulu-Natal in the south, through Mpumalanga, Limpopo (Northern Province) to the northern parts of North-West Province. It is a common tree of drier to moist areas of the tropics and subtropics.

The bark is velvety grey when the tree is young, becoming brownish grey, rough and longitudinally fissured on older branches and stems. The glossy pale green leaves are compound with sub-opposite pairs of leaflets. Flowering of Pterocarpus rotundifolius is stimulated by rain. It bears yellow scented flowers from October to February. The flowers are a good source of nectar and pollen for honeybees.

Roots of Pterocarpus rotundifolius are non-invasive, hence its suitability for group plantings along fence lines, near paved areas and swimming pools. It makes a lovely shade tree during hot summer months. When young, this tree is sensitive to frost, but becomes more tolerant as it matures. Its open crown allows filtered sunlight to reach ground covers and lawn beneath, making it ideal for mixed-use gardens. This tree brings beauty to the landscape and practical benefits such as windbreaks and light screening.

The tree is also known for its durable, reddish-brown heartwood, which is occasionally used in rural areas for making tools, carvings and traditional furniture. Leaves are palatable to livestock, especially in times of drought, making it useful in agroforestry systems. In some cultures, parts of the tree are used in traditional medicine for treating various ailments, although this is not widely documented. The tree’s ability to fix nitrogen contributes to improved soil health, benefiting nearby plants and enhancing overall garden productivity.
