Syzygium guineense – Water pear – Waterpeer – Umdoni

Syzygium guineense is a beautiful medium-sized to large evergreen tree reaching a mature height of 15 to 30m when growing conditions are favourable. Its distribution ranges widely through sub-Saharan Africa. The tree usually occurs in lowland forests, in areas close to swamps and sometimes along river banks hence the common name ‘Water pear’. In South Africa, the tree is found growing naturally in northern Kwazulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

One of the interesting features of the tree is its bark which is smooth and pale coloured on young trees, as the trees mature, the bark becomes rough and flaky, with a grey to dark brown hue. The foliage has a dark green glossy colour and new leaves have an attractive, purplish-red colour. The Water pear produces creamy white flowers from August to December. These are followed by ovoid fruits which turn purplish black when mature, the fruits are edible.

S. guineense can tolerate mild drought conditions, and when young, the tree should be protected from the cold. In the landscapes, this tree can be used as a street or sidewalk tree. It can also be planted as a wind break or noise buffer. This handsome tree is a beauty in the garden.
